badge! A couple of weeks ago, on my birthday in fact, I was heading
into the Peak District for a celebratory luncheon, enjoying the sunshine
and generally revelling in the fact that I <em></em>had not one single
bird to cut out, when my telephone rang. It was Blue Peter's director
asking if I could go up to the Farne Islands that very evening to be
part of a feature they had planned the following day! What would <a data-mce-href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane-Louise_Jordan" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane-Louise_Jordan">Diane Louise Jordan*</a> do? I asked myself, and quickly said YES before I had chance to get too nervous.<br />
<br />
So,
after a quick sandwich, we hot-footed it back home for a slice of
birthday battenburg (homemade with lots of marzipan - my favourite!)
before I caught the train back up to the Farnes, just three days after I
returned home from hanging <a data-mce-href="http://kateslaterillustration.wordpress.com/2013/07/17/flight/" href="http://kateslaterillustration.wordpress.com/2013/07/17/flight/">the exhibition</a>.<br />
<br />
It's
very exciting having your travel arranged for you by someone else. I
spent a good chunk of the journey quickly trying to get to the part of <a data-mce-href="http://thebookbarge.co.uk/wordpress/portfolio/ports-of-call-4/" href="http://thebookbarge.co.uk/wordpress/portfolio/ports-of-call-4/">Susan Cain's <em>Quiet</em></a>
where she enlightens introverts on how to deal with public speaking. It
turns out you need 1) practice: "Aaargh, I have no time to practice!"
and 2) a passion for your subject: "BIRDS! COLLAGE! BLUE PETER! YES!"
Everything would be ok, I promised myself, my jar of Night Time Kalms
rattling reassuringly in my pocket.<br />
<br />
In fact, everything was super.
It should come as no surprise that people who work on Blue Peter are
very lovely people indeed. They even gave me a special HAT. Anyone who
knows just how much I love a good hat will not be surprised by my
delight in having such a fine, green M&S specimen to add to my
collection.<br />
<br />
The children from the local middle school in Seahouses were brilliant. They asked some great questions about <a data-mce-href="http://kateslaterillustration.wordpress.com/2013/07/17/flight/" href="http://kateslaterillustration.wordpress.com/2013/07/17/flight/">my exhibition</a>
and made lovely bird collages in a really short space of time. We also
did quite a lot of walking in and out of the chapel, donning our hats at
the appropriate moment, and a good deal of pointing at puffins:<br />
<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/bppointing.jpg" href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/bppointing.jpg"><img alt="Blue Peter" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1248" data-mce-src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/bppointing.jpg" height="266" src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/bppointing.jpg" width="529" /></a><br />
<br data-mce-bogus="1" />
It was broadcast today and you can now see the whole programme <a data-mce-href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/cbbc/episode/b0379kn8/Blue_Peter_Socks_and_Cookie_the_Cats_Friendship_Bracelets_and_Dr_Who/" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/cbbc/episode/b0379kn8/Blue_Peter_Socks_and_Cookie_the_Cats_Friendship_Bracelets_and_Dr_Who/">here</a> if you're in the UK, it will probably be available for a week or so and the Farnes bit is about 19 minutes in.<br />
<br />
I'll
be back on the Farnes during the summer holidays to run some children's
collage workshops (as seen on Blue Peter!), I'll keep you posted and
should have some definite dates lined up soon.<br />
*My absolute favourite Blue Peter presenter when I was young:<br />

<br />
<i>I
spent the last week of June working high up amongst the rafters of a
14th century chapel on a tiny island in the North Sea, attempting to
suspend hundreds of life-size seabird cutouts from the roof. From my
perch atop the scaffolding tower I felt something akin to a fairly
chaotic puppeteer, as I tied lines to the surrounding beams while the
birds swayed about unpredictably below.</i><br />
<br />
It's been two weeks
since the my exhibition on the Farne Islands opened to the public and I
still haven't written this blog, so I pinched that last paragraph from <a data-mce-href="http://www.barbour.com/blog/local-hero-kate-slater" href="http://www.barbour.com/blog/local-hero-kate-slater">the guest blog I wrote for Barbour</a>. It's difficult to know where to begin summing up such an enormous and incredible project, but I'll start with the birds.<br />
<br />
Somehow
I made 120 bird collages in just five weeks, covering about 20
different species which breed on the Farne Islands, from enormous
cormorants to tiny swallows. These were then photographed (thank you <a data-mce-href="http://www.hollybooth.com/" href="http://www.hollybooth.com/">Holly Booth</a>!) and printed onto gigantic sheets of Foamex, like this:<br />
<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/cutting1.jpg" href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/cutting1.jpg"><img alt="Farnes Flock 2" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1222" data-mce-src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/cutting1.jpg" height="352" src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/cutting1.jpg" width="529" /></a><br />
<br data-mce-bogus="1" />
If
you imagine, as I did, that the name Foamex implies some sort of foamy
quality, you would be entirely wrong. Cutting out 500-odd birds from 3mm
plastic with nothing but a craft knife is no picnic. A HUGE thank you
to everyone who came to the rescue and helped me to accomplish this
mammoth task in just three weeks. It wasn't long before the birds had
taken over the entire ground floor of my parents' house (where I have my
studio) and while I escaped to a bird-free home at night, at one point
they were clambering over cormorants and razorbills just to get
upstairs! This is the plus-side of Foamex, a material so tough and
durable, it could be usefully employed to build an assault course.<br />
<br />
The
other plus-side was that instead of working all on my own up in my
studio, muttering to myself and letting the Radio 4 waves wash over me, I
had company! It made a lovely change and everything much jollier (and
finishing on time much more possible).<br />
<br />
Extra thanks also go to lovely <a data-mce-href="http://cargocollective.com/alicekiteley/" href="http://cargocollective.com/alicekiteley/">Alice Kiteley</a>,
who answered my plea on Twitter and drove across Staffordshire on at
least four occasions to help me, all the super volunteers at <a data-mce-href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sudbury-hall-and-museum-of-childhood/?p=1356309748063" href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sudbury-hall-and-museum-of-childhood/?p=1356309748063">Sudbury Hall</a>, and Jack and Chris, who lent me a fretsaw and so revolutionised the entire bird-cutting-out process! <a data-mce-href="http://tinawebsterillustration.com/" href="http://tinawebsterillustration.com/">Tina Webster</a> also wrote a <a data-mce-href="http://tinawebsterillustration.com/2013/06/21/kate-slater-an-exhibition-on-the-farne-islands/" href="http://tinawebsterillustration.com/2013/06/21/kate-slater-an-exhibition-on-the-farne-islands/">lovely blog</a> about the day she drove all the way down from Yorkshire to assist.<br />
Finally,
the birds were sorted and packed, and the farm felt like it does after
Christmas when the decorations have been taken down. We managed to
squeeze them into my tiny car and I drove up to Northumberland to embark
upon the hanging.<br />
<br />
Unless you're prone to really violent
sea-sickness, travelling to work by boat surely can't be beaten. It is
utterly wonderful. Although I was <i>slightly</i> <i></i>exhausted
by the end of the week, I absolutely loved spending so much time on the
Farnes and disembarking from the boat in the morning, even to be
dive-bombed by dozens of nesting, extremely protective Arctic Terns, was
quite magical.<br />
<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/homeboat11.jpg" href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/homeboat11.jpg"><img alt="Farnes Flock 11" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1233" data-mce-src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/homeboat11.jpg" height="396" src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/homeboat11.jpg" width="529" /></a><br />
<br data-mce-bogus="1" />
When
it came to actually hanging the birds (the wording always sounds a bit
odd...), I was brilliantly assisted by Simon Lee, property manager and,
most importantly, the person who thought St Cuthbert's chapel would be
the perfect venue for a giant collaged avairy. There's a great
time-lapse organised by one of the National Trust rangers, which shows
the whole flock going up in three days, although we did sneak a few more
birds in on the morning of the preview!<br />
<br />
<br />

Here are a few photos of the finished flock - although it's impossible to capture the whole thing. There are more on <a data-mce-href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151466722612493.1073741827.47252387492&type=1" href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151466722612493.1073741827.47252387492&type=1">Facebook</a> showing the whole process from start to finish and on <a data-mce-href="http://www.kateslaterillustration.com/Farnes-Installation-National-Trust" href="http://www.kateslaterillustration.com/Farnes-Installation-National-Trust">my website</a>.<br />

I'll
be seizing all further opportunities to go back to the Farnes this
summer, I had such a wonderful time. The exhibition is open until the
31st October, normal opening times and admission charges apply, more

before it really is the most glorious place to spend a few days
(beautiful beaches, castles, seals, BIRDS, the Cheviot Hills, Hadrian’s

<br />
I have some really exciting news which I can finally tell you ALL about!<br />
<br />
In
August last year, I had THE BEST work day out, ever. It involved
travelling up to Seahouses in Northumberland to meet some lovely people
from the <a data-mce-href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/" href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/">National Trust</a>,
taking a tiny boat across the sea on a beautiful, sunny day, eating
cake delivered by post, a tour of a beautiful island and a really unique
exhibition space, all topped off by a seal watching expedition (and
fish and chips for tea)! It really will take some beating, although I
am, of course, open to offers.<br />
<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/islands.jpg" href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/islands.jpg"><img alt="Islands" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1067" data-mce-src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/islands.jpg" height="352" src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/islands.jpg" width="529" /></a><br />
<br data-mce-bogus="1" />
The
result of all this northern adventuring is that from the end of June
until the end of October this year, a lovely chapel on the National
Trust's beautiful <a data-mce-href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/farne-islands/" href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/farne-islands/">Farne Islands</a> will be filled with a vast flock of my life-size, collaged birds! Similar to those I created for <a data-mce-href="http://www.kateslaterillustration.com/Window-Display-Yorshire-Sculpture-Park" href="http://www.kateslaterillustration.com/Window-Display-Yorshire-Sculpture-Park">Yorkshire Sculpture Park</a>
in 2010, but at least ten times as many and only species which can be
seen on the islands (no flamingos this time), the birds will be
suspended from the beams in the chapel so you'll be able to walk amongst
them as they swoop to and fro!<br />
<br />
The Farne Islands are a tiny group
of islands just off the coast of Northumberland in the north-east of
England. They're one of the most magical places I have ever visited,
this is the breathtaking view looking back towards the mainland from the
Farnes, with Bamburgh Castle on the coast and the Cheviot Hills in the
background.<br />
<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/view-of-coast-1.jpg" href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/view-of-coast-1.jpg"><img alt="View of Coast 1" data-mce-src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/view-of-coast-1.jpg" height="352" src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/view-of-coast-1.jpg" width="529" /></a><br />
<br data-mce-bogus="1" />
The
islands are most famous for their incredible bird life - they have 23
species, including around 37,000 pairs of puffin! Look - it is
impossible to keep yourself from beaming with joy at the sight of ONE,
let alone 37,000 pairs:<br />
<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/puff1.png" href="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/puff1.png"><img alt="Funny Puffin" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1077" data-mce-src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/puff1.png" height="364" src="http://kateslaterillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/puff1.png" width="529" /></a><br />
<br data-mce-bogus="1" />
Luckily,
I'd been to the Farnes on holiday in my teens, so I knew a bit about
them when Simon Lee, the manager for this area of the Northumberland
coast, contacted me about creating a flock especially for this space.
Somehow one of my dream commissions has become reality - a seaside,
bird-based reality! It really couldn't be better.<br />
<br />
The chapel is on
Inner Farne which was once home to St Cuthbert in 678 AD. Built in
1370, the chapel is dedicated to the saint and stands alongside the Pele
Tower which once housed monks and is now home to some of the National
Trust rangers!<br />
Imagine this space filled to the rafters with birds!<br />
<br />

<br />
I'm exhibiting at the <a href="http://www.thejamfactoryoxford.com/">Jam Factory</a> in Oxford this summer! From the 25th July - 20th August, it will be my very first <i>solo show</i> which is exciting and also slightly/very nerve-wracking! I'll be showing an assortment of work old and new. I've put a bear on the poster, so it's safe to say there will probably be some bears in there somewhere, along with the usual birds, artwork from <a href="http://www.andersenpress.co.uk/books/view/1849390754">Magpie's Treasure</a> and <a href="http://www.franceslincoln.co.uk/en/C/1/Book/3315/ABC_London.html">ABC London</a> and lots of new things that are currently under construction!<br />
<br />
The Jam Factory is a really lovely place, a restaurant/bar/gallery and they have lots of workshops and classes too! I've also discovered that the tremendously talented <a href="http://www.juliapott.com/">Julia Pott</a> will be exhibiting there at the same time (7th August - 9th September), which makes two (more) reasons to visit beautiful Oxford this summer.Kate Slaterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06431021427655317731noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7922008770247773868.post-47714349981442209092012-06-07T11:02:00.002+01:002012-06-07T11:02:44.033+01:00And the winner is...ABC London is published today! <br />
<a href="http://www.franceslincoln.co.uk/en/C/1/Book/3315/ABC_London.html">ABC London</a> will be published a week today on the 7th June by Frances Lincoln! Written by James Dunn and illustrated by some loon with a pair of scissors and a glue-stick, it has already had a nice mention in the Bookseller:<br />
<br />
<i>This unusual alphabet picture book really caught my eye. Celebrating
London's unique, diverse culture with entries like "B for Brick Lane",
it's got a contemporary feel and lots of gift book potential.</i><br />
<br />
To celebrate this super occasion I'll be giving away a signed copy of the book. <br />
<br />
All you need to do to enter is either leave a comment below or tweet all about it, including the hashtag #ABCLondon, so I can find you! (You can do both for <i>two</i> entries.)<br />
<br />
My first signing will be at <a href="http://www.thebookbarge.co.uk/">The Book Barge</a> (Barton Marina, Staffordshire) on Saturday 9th. There will be a London landmark themed treasure hunt with a <i>prize</i>! It would be lovely to see you there if you live Midlands-ward.<br />
<br />
Future ABC London events include <a href="http://www.justimaginestorycentre.co.uk/">Just Imagine</a> in Chelmsford, Essex on the 18th and 19th June and <a href="http://www.underthegreenwoodtree.co.uk/">Under the Greenwood Tree</a> in Clapham, London (date to be confirmed).<br />
<br />
Here is <i>B is for Brick Lane, C is for Changing of the Guard</i>. As most letters are only single pages I tried to connect each side of the double spread in some way to make it into one whole illustration.<br />

The one with the horse was for a present, the flowery one an experiment in seeing how quickly I could work once I knew what I was aiming for. The answer is: not very quickly at all - I would have to sell them for extortionate prices (you could probably buy a solid gold lantern for less)! However, all hope is not lost, I'm working on a speedier technique! Any ideas?<br />

It's still a bit of a work in progress, but yesterday was my mum's birthday and I made this for her. <br />
<br />
I'm not sure about the creamy-beigey background of this version of the print - cream is so difficult to photograph accurately! I'd quite like to try hanging it in front of a piece of dark wood because it looked lovely lying on my wooden plan chest.<br />
<br />
Every piece is joined together by wire so you can actually lift the entire thing up in one go. I ended up wrapping two versions of this for mum, one print like this in a frame and also the original sandwiched between two sheets of glass which were cobbled together from two other frames (luckily she doesn't mind presents in progress)! After some twitter-based research I discovered you can get black and white frames like this from Habitat, but I'd like one in dark wood, so I'm going to ask my framer to do it properly.<br />

<br />
I actually did a forward roll of excitement when I first had an email
about this book from Frances Lincoln (this was back in the days when I
lived and worked in my carpeted London bedroom). I spent last summer
embroiled in a paper London, lack of sleep driving me to do ridiculous
things like gilding the tops of the fence at Buckingham Palace with tiny
fragments of first class stamp, not pausing to realise that it will be
utterly impossible to discern the queen's minute gold eye peering out
from the railings.<br />
<br />
It is WONDERFUL to see the finished book.<br />
<br />
Here's a sneak preview of P and Q, I'll post more of the illustrations when the book is published on 7th June! <br />

<a href="http://www.franceslincoln.co.uk/en/C/1/Book/3315/ABC_London.html">ABC London</a> will be available in all good bookshops, especially <a href="http://www.thebookbarge.co.uk/">The Book Barge</a>, where I'll be signing books on Saturday 9th June from 2-4pm at Barton Marina, Staffordshire.<br />
<br />
More news about other book signings, especially one in London on Sunday 10th June, coming soon!<br />
<br />
It's also had a nice mention in the Bookseller:<br />
<br />
This unusual alphabet picture book really caught my eye. Celebrating
London's unique, diverse culture with entries like "B for Brick Lane",
it's got a contemporary feel and lots of gift book potential.<br />

Opting to abandon our usual, excruciatingly slow London Midland train journey for two days on a narrowboat wasn't a difficult decision.<br />

Sarah took <a href="http://www.thebookbarge.co.uk/">The Book Barge</a> to London for the Guardian Open Weekend and spent the week in Angel before finishing at Broadway Market in spectacular style with a wonderful <a href="http://www.hive.co.uk/book/operation-alphabet/10840353/">Operation Alphabet</a> reading and workshop (if you ever read to children, <a href="http://www.ministryofletters.com/">The Ministry of Letters</a>' Sammy will inspire you to quadruple your usual effort - she is a picture book reading phenomenon!). Sarah has just arrived back at Barton Marina (having traveled at lightning speeds of 4mph for 10 days) for a flood of <a href="http://www.facebook.com/events/275353762525813/">Titanic anniversary book signings</a> tomorrow evening. Life-jackets not included.<br />
<br />
We sailed merrily from Angel through to Camden, Little Venice and London Zoo all the way to Watford. We even visited the farm where Black Beauty was filmed! Thus proving my rashly concocted belief that there is NOWHERE important that cannot be visited by barge.<br />
<br />
Paying no heed to the Private Property signs, we accosted a wheelbarrowing stablehand who, somewhat bemused by our enthusiasm (“Black Beauty? Yeah... I think that was before my time), kindly let us have a look around.<br />

The Book Barge is a truly wonderful place. Visit if you have the chance and if you don’t you can still support Sarah by buying your books from the <a href="http://www.hive.co.uk/">Hive network</a>. All you have to do is select The Book Barge as your favourite book shop and she’ll receive some of the proceeds. AND prices are discounted - <a href="http://www.hive.co.uk/book/magpies-treasure/10681699/">Magpie’s Treasure</a> is currently just £4.89! What more could you possibly want? <br />

<i><span style="font-size: small;">*Other advantages to working at home include accounting in pyjamas and ALL art materials counting as business expenses, even ribbons and encyclopedias of mammals! Disadvantages mostly revolve around not actually having any time off because of overwhelming feelings of failure, guilt and/or stress or a good, old-fashioned, looming deadline. However, this is ultimately inconsequential because you can throw open your curtains every morning singing "I have the VERY BEST job in the WORLD!" to passersby, or in my case, cows.</span></i>Kate Slaterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06431021427655317731noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7922008770247773868.post-60328561358785445702012-03-24T08:44:00.000+00:002012-03-24T08:44:08.192+00:003 for 2 Greetings Cards<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Last week we had four whole days away in Budapest. It's such a beautiful, fascinating city, I urge you to visit! It has absolutely everything you could want: magical spires and domes, mosaic-tiled roofs, enormous quantities of cake and goulash, yellow trams, ancient baths, more galleries and museums than we could visit, extraordinary ceilings, wildly ornate churches (including St Stephen's Basilica which actually contains the eponymous saint's mummified <i>arm</i>), a fascinating history, a spectacular parliament, breathtaking views... even sunshine!<br />

I'm off to London shortly for a Magpie's Treasure reading and collage workshop tomorrow at <a href="http://www.underthegreenwoodtree.co.uk/">Under the Greenwood Tree</a> in Clapham Old Town at 11am. My window display is up there at the moment and it would be great to see you if you're in the area! Or, if you happen to see me frantically cutting out magpies on the train down, feel free to get involved!* It will be FUN, I promise.<br />

Simon & Schuster, July 2012) quite a while ago, but haven't been able to share the accompanying black and white interior illustrations until now. This project was my first foray into monochrome collage and I was rather nervous to begin with, but thankfully the lovely people at Simon & Schuster were pleased with the result! There are five altogether, and you can see them all <a href="http://www.kateslaterillustration.com/#2169815/Eva-of-the-Farm-Simon-Schuster">here</a>.<br />

I'm thrilled to be successful for a third time, especially as a rather exciting project has come about from having my work in last year's Images 35.<br />
